The visit to Sichuan let me have more knowledge about the following after Sichuan disaster. Everywhere have post-disaster reconstruction. During the visits to the Red Cross, we find that there is a lot of enthusiastic people from around the globe and plenty of donations of materials. From our series of horticultural activities, we see the happy face one by one; I deeply felt that, in addition supplies and body treatment, they also need spiritual healing.

Thank you for providing me a wonderful chance to experience the power of Horticulture Therapy through this Sichuan Horticulture Therapy Trip. As a volunteer, I think I was, in many ways, benefited more than the participants in the workshops. Working with the school kids is the most challenged task, but it also is the joyful moment, especially when I share their happiness. Their feedback touches me and motivates me to keep on. Adults are always less easy to share their feelings. But the Longxi-Hongkou National Nature Reserve Administrative Bureau staff members surprised me by their willingness to share their feelings about the workshop, especially after they had gone through the unforgettable experience of the terrible catastrophe.

Member’s sharing—Forest

With the heart of helping the earthquake survivors, we went to Sichuan on 15 October 2009. The most remarkable events happened in this trip was we came across a strong aftershock in hotel while we were sleeping. A thought was arise from my heart at that moment; we are all incompetent and incapable when compare with the Mother Nature. Fortunately, we were all safe. However the earthquake gave me a strong ripple in my heart when I faced the dead so close. I reminded what we met in Sichuan when I was on the plane to Hong Kong, I found that people in Sichuan are facing their life positively even they lost the relatives or their limbs. Before the trip, I though Sichuan was a city of sorrow. In fact, it is a city of hope, life is strong then what we expected.

Helping others means helping yourself. Every staff in this Base had faced a earthquake, lost their family and felt sorrow in their life. However, I found that they were totally recovered. Positive and active facing the future is the most effective way to cure them, At this moment, its remind me that we cannot turn back the clock or control the future, but we can seize this moment, enjoy this moment, sharing every moment with others. After this Therapeutic Horticulture activity, I learn more than the staff at breeding centre. From the helper become being help, it is amazing experience and I will seize every moment in my future.

Member’s sharing—Hong Man

Having traveled Mainland for so many times, it is the first time I feel nervous for a Mainland China travel, not because of the anticipated HT sessions, but my spine and neck recovery.  After a prolonged waiting, I finally received a spine and neck treatment on the Saturday prior to the Sichuan trip.  The whole trip is under a threat of bone dislocation, luckily my teammates are very considerate, I can feel that I was well protected during the trip under their care taking.  I belief that is the magic of nature, especially for those who are interested in HT, all born with a caring heart.  Wish my teammates all the best.

Horticultural Therapy Elementary, Intermediate Certificate Courses – Mackay Memorial Hospital, Hospice Centre (26,27/11, 30/11-3/12)

Connie left for Taiwan to teach for the HT Certificate Course for 6 full days. There were 23 participants for the Elementary Course and 17 students for the Intermediate Course.
To complete Intermediate Course with Achievement Certificate, students had to complete 2 written assignments and passed examination.
Mackay Memorial Hospital Hospice centre is famous for her high quality and professional hospice care ( http://www.mmh.org.tw ). They saved patients of terminal illness and their families.
The Hospice Centre has 2 outdoor gardens, students had site survey there and prepared a report with recommendations for therapeutic landscape. Students tried wheelchair and hospital bed to see the accessibility of the roof garden.
I was inspired by the passion of the students. This made me more serious in teaching. After the course, some students started to prepare project proposal for internship. They hoped to be registered as a professional horticultural therapist to provide HT services to benefit patients, their families and the centre staff.
